Thomas D. '52 and Regina K. McElroy received the 2008 John P. Curley Award. Tom and Regina, have four sons, Tom, Jr. ’80, Jack, Mike, and Bill. Tom, Jr., was a senior and co-captain of the 1979 soccer team, when he was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away on July 17, 1981.
Tom and Regina established the Tom McElroy Memorial Scholarship on November 16, 1983, with an initial balance of $3,905, representing contributions to Boston College in Tom's memory. The scholarship is awarded each year to the soccer student-athlete who best exemplifies the qualities of courage and perseverance, qualities which made Tom so special. The McElroy family held dinner dances for 13 years to support the Scholarship, then transitioned to a Golf Classic in 1996. From inception through the 2007-2008 academic year, 91 student-athletes have received aid totaling $695,053. There have been 3,190 individuals who have contributed to the Tom McElroy Memorial Scholarship over the past 25 years.
In 1987, Tom was inducted into the Boston College Athletic Hall of Fame, the first men's soccer player so honored, and in 2005, the Tom McElroy Memorial Scholarship became the first athletic memorial scholarship at BC to exceed $1M. The current market value of the Fund stands at more than $1.5M.
