Boston College Athletics Corporate Partner Marketing Guide
Boston College Athletics
Boston College, founded in 1863, has a rich athletic history that dates back to its first football game, played in the fall of 1893. Men's basketball and hockey soon followed, in 1904 and 1918 respectively. By the early 1970's, Boston College Athletics had already created a winning tradition, but still had another legacy to add. The first women's basketball team went into the books in 1973, although the all-female Newton College did not merge with the all-male Boston College until several years later, turning out the first official Boston College Women's Basketball team in 1976.

Today, Boston College has an enrollment of 14,500 students; many are active members in the Eagles' 31 Varsity Sports. Boston College ranks among the nation's elite collegiate programs, as its student-athletes are some of the best in the classroom. According to the 2001 NCAA Graduation Rates Report, Boston College's overall athlete graduation rate (which has averaged about 85% during the last 10 years) is tied for 5th in the nation.
While many reflect on the past athletic success of former BC athletes, a new generation at Boston College has set the stage and raised the bar of athletic achievement. A member of the BIG EAST Conference and HOCKEY EAST Association since their inception, numerous Eagles programs have gained national exposure through their success. Among the many sports that fall under the auspices of the Boston College Athletic Association, the football, men's and women's basketball and men's ice hockey programs have created a solid reputation for themselves, regularly appearing in post-season play and enjoying both regional and national television coverage. In 2002, U.S. News & World Report ranked Boston College as one of the Top 20 collegiate sports programs in the nation. Boston College Athletics and the athletes themselves consistently reflect the school's motto, ever to excel.

High Profile Sports

Boston College Football
For over 100 years, the Eagles have gone head to head on the gridiron, facing some of the toughest teams in the country. Since the inaugural games of the BIG EAST Football Conference, Boston College has propelled itself further into the national spotlight. The men of "The Heights" boast 13 bowl game appearances, one National Championship, one Heisman Trophy winner, one Maxwell Award winner, one Walter Camp Award winner and one Outland Trophy winner; more than 200 Eagles have gone on to play professional football. Autumn afternoons and evenings in Chestnut Hill are synonymous with the traditions and pageantry that is BC Football; home games bring 44,500 fans to Alumni Stadium who enjoy a day of tailgating, pre-game festivities and exciting football action. Loyal fans who are unable to cheer on the maroon and gold from within the gates of Alumni Stadium can still catch all the play-by-play action as it unfolds. Eagles Football can be seen on national and regional television throughout the season and has every game broadcast live via radio and the internet.
Boston College Basketball
The winter teams of Boston College have almost as storied a history as the football team. Beginning play at the turn of the century, men's basketball is one of the oldest hoops programs in the nation. The team's 13 NCAA and nine NIT appearances are tied to several generations of basketball players and coaches. The ever-evolving Eagles basketball team conjures up names such as Coach Bob Cousy and Terry Driscoll, and brings to the forefront of one's mind some of the more recent players who have gone onto the ranks of the NBA: Dana Barros, Howard Eisley and John Bagley. BC forged into the 21st Century with no sign of slowing down, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 13th time.
The women's basketball team is on pace to take the future by storm as well. The women capped off their final two seasons of the 20th Century with back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, and the first 26-win season in the program's short but impressive history. They returned to the Big Dance in 2002, finishing the season with a 23-8 record. With close to 30 years in the books, the Eagles face a strong BIG EAST schedule and annually incorporate teams from the SEC or ACC into their list of foes.
Boston College Hockey
Perennially one of the strongest schedules from top to bottom, the HOCKEY EAST Association provides fans with some of the grittiest hockey competition in the nation. A team that has turned out two Hobey Baker winners, Boston College boasts 39 players who have gone on to the NHL ranks and consistently maintains several drafted players on its roster. Along the road to two National Championships, the Eagles have won 12 Beanpot Tournaments and nine HOCKEY EAST Championships and have reached the Frozen Four 17 times in 22 NCAA Tournament appearances. The Eagles have generated a strong and dedicated following in a town that shares four Division I powerhouse programs.
Corporate Market & Fan Profile
Corporate Partner Market Expectations
Companies who enter into a partnership with the Boston College Athletic Association can expect to reap numerous dividends through their agreement, designed to have both parties emerge as winners. The BCAA sports marketing representatives strive to create unique corporate packages to meet the specific needs of each sponsor. Sports marketing offers each client a variety of avenues through which they may put their logo, brand and product directly in front of a captive audience. There are four levels of sponsorship available, three of which fall under the new TEAM BC sponsorship program. BCAA corporate partnerships are designed to enhance the following:
To create a package that directly propels clients closer to meeting their own company's marketing objectives
To provide positive brand imaging and a business-to-business relationship by tying corporate partners to a university and athletic program of notable prestige and success
To maximize brand awareness through repeated exposure to a core fan base
To introduce consumers to new product via advertising, sampling and promotions
To capitalize on a condensed market sector, representative of all major age groups
Who is the Boston College Market?
The target audience is comprised of four sectors: season ticket holders, alumni, the student body and Boston College fans at-large. While the fans who are most directly impacted by sponsorships are the season and individual ticket purchasers, including the students, the broad coverage by live television and radio broadcasts affords our corporate partners the ability to gain the attention of all Eagles Athletics followers. The majority of the ticket purchasers, excluding students, are alumni who reside in the Eastern Massachusetts region and annually earn over $80,000. Students are an invaluable asset to have in the target audience and provide a solid recruiting base for your company. Market research was recently conducted in order to better inform our current and potential partners more specifically of whom their target audience consists.

TEAM BC
TEAM BC Corporate Partner Program
The Boston College Athletic Association has recently redesigned its sponsorship program in order to maximize the opportunities available, to offer our corporate partners the best possible service and to enhance the game atmosphere of all revenue sports, assuring Eagles teams of a true home arena advantage. TEAM BC has been established to provide an exclusive group of corporate partners with a package that far exceeds the traditional expectations of a university/sponsor agreement. As TEAM BC members, partners will not only have their contract fulfilled for the inventory they expect, but will also be presented with the exclusive opportunity to become a part of the BC Athletics family, gaining the inside track to all that the Boston College Athletic Association can offer.
TEAM BC consists of three levels: Title Sponsor, Big Four and Eagle Eight. While not everyone may be able to find a niche within TEAM BC that best suits their company's goals, a BC Athletics Supporter sponsorship level is also offered, separate from TEAM BC. Promotions & Product Sampling
Half-time and Intermission Promotions and Entertainment
Noted for its great traditions, Boston College consistently seeks new ways to enhance the athletic event experience for its fans, young and old. The marching and pep bands as well as the mascots have become synonymous with athletic contests held in Alumni Stadium and Conte Forum. BC Sports Marketing continues to build upon that to round out the entertainment by offering half-time and intermission contests, game-shows, theatrical groups and youth games. Youth scrimmages, 20/20 Shootouts, Let's Make a Deal, theatrical & dance groups and Dress Like an Eagle relays are just a few of the many possible entertainment scenarios that can be created to promote your company, offering positive brand imaging and concepts to fit your needs and budget.
In-Game Promotions

Whether you choose to set up a kiosk, display your product line or distribute/introduce a new product, you can guarantee brand awareness grabbing the attention of Boston College fans. The stadium parking lot and arena concourses offer prime real estate to utilize for showcasing your latest products.
Athletics Related Events & Groups
Below are outlined opportunities that you and your company may elect to sponsor or become involved with. While many of those events and groups target different needs and fan diametric, this is not a limited list. The BCAA Sports Marketing representatives strive to create and implement new activities and events in order that game atmosphere continuously evolves. Any ideas or suggestions that you may have that could better suit the goals of your company's relationship with Boston College are always welcome.
Game Sponsorship
Averaging close to 55 home games, between football, men's and women's basketball and men's hockey, corporate partners have plenty of exciting contests to promote. By becoming a Game Sponsor, partners can supply the premium give-aways, host a hospitality tent, sponsor the halftime or intermission promotion and receive additional public address announcements and video board recognition.
Hospitality Events
As corporate partners of BC Athletics, our sponsors may choose to host a pre-game hospitality event for their own clients, employees, friends and family. With such limited and high-demand space at Boston College prior to football games, this is an ideal opportunity to make the most of the inside connection with Boston College Athletics. A hospitality event can be tied in with a partner's Game Sponsorship, truly making your corporate outing a memorable one.
BC Football FanFest
It is no secret that parking on the Boston College Campus on a football game-day is at a premium! The Athletic Association has sought to address the challenge that many fans face: they want to tailgate and enjoy a festive atmosphere prior to the game, but unless they park on campus, they can not otherwise indulge in this football ritual. From this has been born the BC Football FanFest. The massive Flynn Recreation Complex, which will host this new event, is directly across the parking lot, 30 yards away from the gates to Alumni Stadium. While food and beverage vendors will be spread throughout the venue, there will be much more to this event than simply food: interactive games for kids and adults, vehicle displays, raffles, music, cheerleader and mascot appearances, vendor booths for BCAA sponsors etc. This "tailgating" experience will be open two hours prior to kick-off and will expose fans to all that our corporate partners have to offer.
Family Day / Spring Football Game
By the time late spring rolls around, college football fans are counting the weeks until season openers kick-off. For many BC Alumni, the football season is a time to reunite with old college friends, to tailgate and to cheer on the maroon and gold. For many, it is also a time to introduce their children to the excitement of Eagles Football. What better way to introduce youngsters to Boston College Football and get them excited for the upcoming season than at the intra-squad football game and Family Day? This family-oriented event, scheduled to coincide with the annual Jay McGillis Memorial Spring Football Game also includes athlete participation representative of many BC Varsity Sports. Parents and children alike have the opportunity to meet and greet the players; kids can test their football kicking, receiving and passing abilities, their basketball skills and can enjoy the inflatable games and concessions available. Title sponsorship or sponsor participation is always open in a wide variety of capacities to serve your needs and budget.
Pep Rallies
The traditional pep rally has been reborn at "The Heights." During the fall season, as football is underway and hockey has commenced, droves of students pour into O'Neill Plaza to celebrate their teams. This prelude to the big weekend, often the famed "Rivalry Weekend" between BC and Notre Dame, includes highlight videos, team appearances, brief speeches from the coaches, give-aways, product sampling, a laser or light show, the Pep Band, mascots, cheerleaders and music. This event, which attracts substantial media coverage, presents our partners with an invitation for title sponsorship or participation. This may vary between providing samples of their own product, sponsoring the premium give-aways distributed to the first several hundred or thousand students in attendance and headlining the promotion of the event itself.
Kid's Club
One of the newest additions to the BC Athletic Association, the kid's club has been developed to give our young fans a more interactive involvement in the Eagles sports they cheer for. The BCAA seeks to continually foster a family-oriented environment, offering wholesome, exciting entertainment for fans of all ages. The kid's club, known as Baldwin's Bunch, provides youngsters with the inside track to their favorite athletes and sports and allows our corporate partners the ability to reach this normally difficult to directly target market. The Baldwin's Bunch title sponsor has the ability to include coupons, gift certificates and promotional goods with mailings and publications generated from the BC Sports Marketing office to the members of the club, as well as logo recognition in the club's brochure.
