The Boston College Hall of Fame was founded by the Varsity Club in 1970 and has inducted over 400 of the finest student-athletes ever to wear the Maroon and Gold.

For over twenty years, the Hall of Fame was without a home, but in 1989 the Varsity Club unveiled the plaques of the 1989 Hall inductees on the West Concourse of Conte Forum. In 2008, as part of the Conte Forum renovations a new re-designed Hall of Fame Wall display was unveiled.

EIGHT ATHLETES TO BE INDUCTED INTO BOSTON COLLEGE VARSITY CLUB HALL OF FAME
Ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 1, 2009

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Eight of the finest athletes in Boston College history comprise the Class of 2009 to be inducted into the Varsity Club Hall of Fame this fall.

The athletes being honored are: Danya Abrams '97 (basketball), Gordie Farkouh '83 (soccer), Antonio Garay '02 (wrestling/football), Becky Gottstein '02 (basketball), Gerry Hamel '61 (baseball), Craig Janney '87 (hockey), Tom McManus '92 (football) and Tom Nalen '93 (football) .

The honorees will be inducted in a ceremony on Sunday, Nov. 1 at Sheraton Needham Hotel in Needham, Mass. They will also be recognized at halftime of the Eagles' football game against Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Here are short biographies of the new Hall of Famers:

Danya Abrams '97 (basketball): A three-time All-Big East first-team honoree, Danya Abrams led the basketball team to three NCAA Tournament berths in his stellar four-year career. He made an immediate impact on the program, starting 25 games and leading the Eagles to the NCAA Tournament's Elite Eight in his freshman season. He currently ranks seventh on BC's career scoring list (2,053 points) and third on its career rebounding list (1,029 rebounds). After graduation, Abrams enjoyed a highly-successfully 13-year career in Europe (nine years in Spain, four years in Greece).

Gordie Farkouh '83 (soccer): Gordie Farkouh was a standout goalkeeper for the men's soccer team from 1979-82. He led the Eagles to 15 wins in each of his final three seasons. The Manhasset, N.Y., product remains BC's career leader in four statistical categories - saves (359), goals against average (0.71), shutouts (33) and wins (38). In his senior season (1982), he recorded an amazing 14 shutouts.

Antonio Garay '02 (wrestling/football): Antonio Garay was both a wrestler and a football player during his collegiate career. He's being inducted primarily because of his exceptional wrestling record. He was a three-time participant in the NCAA Championship. In 2000, he earned All-American honors after finishing fourth in the heavyweight division at the NCAA Championship. That same year, Garay captured the Gorrarian Award (most pins in the least amount of time at the NCAA Championship). On the football field, he overcame several injuries to record 172 career tackles in 31 games.

Becky Gottstein '02 (basketball): Becky Gottstein was a two-time All-Big East second-team selection and earned BC's Female Eagle of the Year honor in 2002-03 (which was her fifth year at BC; she was injured for most of the 2001-02 season). She finished as the school's second all-time leading rebounder (884 rebounds) and its fifth all-time leading scorer (1,490 points).

Gerry Hamel '61 (baseball): Gerry Hamel was a three-year starter on the BC baseball team. He batted third and played right field for the Eagles. He led the team in RBIs twice and in runs scored once. Hamel was noted for his great speed and his terrific defense. He earned Greater Boston League all-star honors twice and NCAA Tournament District 1 all-star honors in 1961. BC went to consecutive College World Series (1961 and 1962) during his collegiate career.

Craig Janney '87 (hockey): Craig Janney played two years on the Eagles' hockey team. He registered 27 points in his freshman season, when was the youngest player on the team. One year later, as a sophomore, Janney captured All-America first-team accolades after totaling a team-high 83 points - 28 goals and 55 assists. That same year, he gained All-New England and All-Hockey East first-team honors. A member of the 1988 U.S. Olympic hockey team, Janney played 12 years in the National Hockey League (with Boston, St. Louis, San Jose, Winnipeg, Phoenix, Tampa Bay, NY Islanders).

Tom McManus '92 (football): Tom McManus was a two-time All-Big East first-team selection (1991 and 1992). He earned All-America third-team honors from the Football News in 1992. McManus, a linebacker who came to BC from Buffalo Grove, Illinois, currently ranks fourth on BC's list of all-time tacklers (427 tackles). He totaled more than 150 tackles in each of his last two seasons. After BC, he played four years in the NFL with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Tom Nalen '93 (football): Tom Nalen is one of the best offensive lineman in BC football history. In fact, Nalen is now renowned as one of the greatest offensive lineman in NFL history. The Foxboro, Mass., product started every game in his last three years at BC. He earned Associated Press All-America third-team honors, All-Big East second-team honors and ECAC first-team accolades in 1993. He closed his collegiate career playing in both the East-West Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl. Nalen spent his entire 15-year professional career with the Denver Broncos. He started 188 games (of the 194 games in which he played), the most for an offensive lineman in Broncos history. Nalen helped lead Denver to Super Bowl championships in 1998 and 1999.
