Game One Recap: BC 14, Stetson 10
DeLand, Fla. - Sophomore Pat Dean tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout in his second-career start to pace the Boston College baseball team to a 6-0 win against Stetson on Saturday night at Melching Field at Conrad Park. The Eagles swept the doubleheader with a 14-10 win earlier in the day to improve to 3-0.
Dean struck out eight batters and walked just one. He threw 103 pitches and 77 of them were strikes. The two teams will finish the series when they meet at 12:30 p.m. tomorrow.
Sophomore Garret Smith went 3-for-4 in the game with two runs. Freshman Brad Zapenas went 2-for-5 with a pair of two-out RBI while sophomore Matt Hamlet went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall notched his first homer of the season in the game.
Boston College broke through first in the top of the fourth. With one out, junior Tony Sanchez ripped a single through the pitcher's legs. After Ryan Sweat got a strikeout for the second out of the inning, junior Mike Belfiore ripped a 2-2 pitch down the right field line. Sanchez took off for second on Sweat's motion and made it home safely. The throw from right went to second which Belfiore beat for a double.
The Eagles added two more in the top of the fifth to take a 3-0 lead. Smith roped a liner of off the third baseman's glove to lead off the inning. A hit-and-run was on for Hamlet on the first pitch and he executed perfectly, hitting the spot at second that Mark Jones had left to cover the bag, to put runners on the corners with nobody out.
On the next pitch, another hit and run was on with senior Harry Darling but the pitch was way outside. Hamlet still got to second though which put two runners in scoring position. After Darling went down on strikes, junior Robbie Anston brought Smith home when he grounded out to first.
Zapenas then came up in a big spot with two outs and drove a double just past the diving glove of the left fielder to put Boston College up 3-0.
Identical to the fifth inning, Smith popped another single to lead off the seventh and then Hamlet got him to third when he used an inside-out swing to single into right field. Darling chopped a ball to the pitcher to drive Smith home for an RBI to give BC a 4-0 lead.
Zapenas continued his impressive series by driving in another two-out run with a single to score Hamlet. Stetson went to the bullpen to get the right-handed Robbie Powell to face him but Zapenas still delivered.
Wiswall led off the top of the eighth inning with a homer to right-center on the first pitch he saw to make the score 6-0.
In the bottom of the eighth with a runner on, Mark Jones nearly put an end to Dean's shutout by hitting a towering shot into left field. Redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence, who had pinch hit for Hamlet in the top of the inning, chased the ball to the wall and leaped to rob Jones of a homer with a spectacular catch.
