Box Score

BRADENTON, Fla. - Sophomore Mike Flynn (Trumbull, Conn.) drove in the game's only run with a fourth-inning single and senior Matt Elfeldt (Delmar, N.Y.) and two relievers combined on a five-hit shutout as the baseball picked up its first win of the year, downing Duquesne, 1-0, in a 7 1/2-inning affair Tuesday afternoon at the Bollettieri Baseball Academy.

Sophomore Jason Delaney led off the fourth with a double to right. After a strikeout, Flynn staged a battle with Dukes starter Bob Reifschneider. He fouled off several pitches before finding one he liked, ripping it up the middle to drive in Delaney.

That was all the Eagles (1-5) would need as Elfeldt and sophomores Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.) and Ryan Morgan (Weymouth, Mass.) teamed up to limit Duquesne to just five hits. Elfeldt went five, allowing three hits while striking three and walking four in evening his record to 1-1 on the year. Martinez threw a scoreless sixth, and Morgan shut out the Dukes (0-7) in the seventh and eighth to earn his first career save.

Elfeldt's outing continued the Eagles' stellar starting pitching of late. Boston College starters have not allowed an earned run in 17.1 innings.

The game was tense right down to the final play. With runners on the corners and two outs, Duquesne's Bill Swart took off for second. Junior catcher Garrett Greer (Peabody, Mass.) alertly pump-faked to second, causing the runner on third, Pete Maropis, to momentarily break for home. After a short rundown, Maropis was eventually tagged out by Morgan for the game's final out.

Eagle hurlers were helped in the game by three double plays, two of which were of the inning-ending variety.

Sophomore Eric Wright (Southboro, Mass.) collected two hits for BC.

The team looks to continue its winning ways Wednesday, March 5 in a 7 p.m. meeting with Stetson at Melching Field in DeLand, Fla.
