Baseball Falls 4-2 At UConn

STORRS, Conn. - Baseball looked to get back on the winning track after being swept at home this weekend to NC State, but dropped a 4-2 decision this afternoon to former Big East Rival Connecticut at J.O. Christian Field. The loss is the Eagles' fourth in as many days, and drops their overall record to 8-15-1. UConn improves to 12-12 overall with the win.
Uconn senior starter Brendan McGinn won his fourth consecutive decision improving to 4-1, and held the Eagles to just one earned run on five hits through seven innings. BC senior Ted Ratliff took the loss after giving up four runs and seven hits in 5-1/3 innings of work.
The Eagles would get the game's first run in the top of the second when third baseman Eric Campbell delivered a one-out home run over the left field wall. BC would score again in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly from right fielder Johnny Ayers, giving them an early 2-0 lead.
The Huskies answered with a run in the bottom of the third on a two-out rally to cut the Eagles' lead in half. Freshman Peter Fatse was hit by a pitch to start the inning before stealing second base two pitches later. Sophomore Dale Brannon collected his ninth RBI of the season as he followed with a single to center field to score Fatse from second.
Uconn struck for two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 3-2 and never look back. Freshman center fielder Harold Brantley Jr. opened the inning with a double into right-center before Fatse was hit to put runners on first and second.
Senior Matt Untiet later advanced both runners one base with a one-out grounder to the right side. Shortstop Dennis Donovan put the Huskies ahead for good as he blooped a single into center field to score both runners. UConn would add an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI double from Erik Turgeon capping the 4-2 victory.
