STORRS, Conn. - Boston College scored six runs in the sixth inning, capped off by a three-run homer by Barry Butera to defeat the Connecticut Huskies 10-4, Wednesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field. With the win the Eagles improved to 13-14 overall this season, while the Huskies dropped to 14-12.
Butera went 2-for-4 at the plate with a single and sac fly to go along with his three-run homer. Eric Campbell (3-for-5, two runs) and Mickey Wiswall (2-for-3, two runs) rounded out the multi-hit players for the Eagles.
John Leonard (2-0) worked the first seven innings to earn the victory. The freshman scattered eight hits and recorded two strikeouts.
Chris Kowalski and Nick Asselin each pitched a scoreless inning to secure the win.
The Eagles broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third off UConn starter Dusty Odenbach (2-2). Harry Darling, Butera and Michael Belfiore hit consecutive one-out singles to push across the first run of the game. Odebach got out of the jam when Tony Sanchez hit into a double play to end the BC threat.
The Huskies answered with a rally of their own in the bottom half of the third with four runs. Gordon Stevens started the inning with a double off the centerfield fence. Harold Brantley reached on an infield single and Pierre LePage walked to load the bases of Leonard. Elliot Glynn lined a base hit of Leonard's left leg to score Stevens. Pat Mahoney hit a two-run double down the right-field line, which plated LePage and Glynn. Mike Olt upped the score to 4-1 on a RBI ground out that scored Glynn.
BC used a six-run fifth inning to retake the lead, 7-4. Campbell, who collected two hits in the frame, started the scoring outburst with a single. Sam Shaughnessy followed with walk. Garret Smith hit a ground ball that was booted for an error which Campbell came around to score on. After scoring two more runs, Butera connected for a three-run blast to right field to give the Eagles six runs in the inning.
In the seventh, the Eagles tacked on three more runs. Sudol and Harry Darling each drew bases loaded walks and Butera collected his fourth RBI of the day with a sac fly to make the score 10-4.
BC hosts Duke for a three-game ACC series, starting on Friday on Commander Shea Field at 2:30 p.m.
