Baseball Takes Two From Seton Hall

April 4, 2005

Final Stats

Junior Nate Jeanes threw his second complete game of the season on Monday afternoon, leading Boston College to a doubleheader sweep of Big East rival Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. The Eagles won the first game in extra innings, 11-8, and Jeanes delivered a three-hit shutout to give BC a 2-0 win in game two.

Jeanes struck out six and walked just one en route to his first career shutout. The southpaw retired the game's first 14 batters and didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning. Jeanes (2-1) leads the Eagles with a 1.71 ERA in 31.2 innings of work.

The game was scoreless until the top of the eighth inning. Freshman Jonny Weiss began the decisive rally with a single through the right side and advanced to second on senior Dave Preziosi's sacrifice bunt. Sophomore left fielder Pete Frates followed with the first home run of his career, blasting a two-run shot to right.

Jeanes retired the side in order in the bottom half of the eighth and surrendered one hit in the ninth before closing the door on the Pirates.

BC (18-6, 6-1) managed just four hits in the second game off of Seton Hall senior Jake Haggerty, who went the distance on the mound for the Pirates.

The afternoon's first game was the antithesis of the pitcher's duel that characterized the second. The Eagles pounded out 11 hits and stole four bases on their way to victory.

Sophomore Kevin Boggan relieved BC starter Joe Martinez in the bottom of the sixth inning and stopped the bleeding, as BC held an 8-7 advantage entering the last inning.

Boggan surrendered the tying run in the bottom of the seventh, however, and the game headed to extra innings.

With no outs and runners on first and third in the top of the eighth, freshman Johnny Ayers hit a sacrifice fly to left field, knocking in senior Mike Flynn and reclaiming the lead for the Eagles. BC scored an additional two runs after a Seton Hall wild pitch and passed ball.

Boggan (4-0) allowed one hit in the bottom of the eighth, but was able to escape unscathed and nailed home the win.

Senior Drew Locke was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI in the game one victory. Locke hit his second home run of the season in the third inning.

BC has won 18 of its last 20 games.
