Box Score
Boston College will not win the Baseball Beanpot for the third consecutive season. The Eagles fell to Northeastern on Wednesday evening, 7-2, in the first round of the tournament at LeLacheur Park in Lowell, Mass.
Trailing 7-0 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Eagles (23-12) drew two walks to lead off the inning against Northeastern reliever Tristan Besse. The sophomore walked seniors Dave Preziosi and Drew Locke and surrendered a bloop single to sophomore third baseman Jared Mcguire to load the bases. Jason Delaney knocked in BC's first run of the game by drawing a five-pitch walk to score Preziosi.
The Huskies (13-15) replaced Besse with senior Matt Piryk and BC catcher Shawn McGill hit a screamer that was caught at shortstop by a diving Arman Sidhu. Tom Mackor followed with a sacrifice fly to deep left field that scored Locke and advanced the runners to second and third. Ryne Reynoso ended the inning with a ground out to second base.
Northeastern jumped on the board with three consecutive hits in the top of the fourth inning off BC starting pitcher Terry Doyle. Sidhu led off with a double to right center and scored on right fielder Jeff Heriot's double down the right field line. Senior Miguel Paquette followed with a single up the middle to give the Huskies a two-run lead.
The Eagles threatened in the bottom of the fifth after shortstop Marco Albano led off with a double to deep center field. Freshman second baseman Johnny Ayers attempted to sacrifice Albano to third, but fouled out to the catcher to make the first out of the inning. Preziosi proceeded to single to center field, putting runners on first and third, but was caught stealing during the next at-bat. Locke grounded out to second to end the inning.
BC had another chance to get on the board in the seventh inning. Right fielder Mike Flynn led off with a walk and advanced to second after Reynoso grounded out to second. With one out, Albano drove the ball to deep right field. The ball eluded Heriot's grasp in right, and Albano trotted into second with a double. Flynn thought Heriot had made the catch and was thrown out while trying to advance to third on the relay throw from second base.
The Huskies scored five more runs in the top of the eighth to put the game away.
Albano was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles in his first game since March 26. The shortstop was injured in the second game of a doubleheader at St. John's after being hit in the face.
Doyle (4-1) allowed seven hits and three earned runs in his first loss of the season. He retired the first eight batters of the game and finished with five strikeouts.
The Eagles will play Massachusetts at 2 p.m. in tomorrow's consolation game at Fenway Park. Northeastern and Harvard will meet for the championship at 5 p.m.
