Box Score

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Miami's Chris Hernandez allowed a run in the first inning and then kept the Boston College baseball team scoreless the rest of the way as the No. 13 Hurricanes beat the Eagles, 5-1, Friday afternoon at a rainy Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

Hernandez earned the win on the bump after throwing 7.0 innings and scattering six hits. He struck out eight and walked two. BC senior JB MacDonald had a solid outing as well, working 6.1 innings and allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out three and walked four but was saddled with the loss.

Junior Robbie Anston was the only Eagle to knock two hits on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double while also scoring BC's only run of the game. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall drove the run in on a fielder's choice.

Yasmani Grandal led Miami (30-15, 14-11 ACC) at the plate, going 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two runs scored and a pair of RBI. Jason Hagerty went 1-for-3 while driving in two runs and Ryan Jackson went 2-for-4.

Boston College (28-18, 11-12 ACC) hopped on the scoreboard right away with a run in the bottom of the first. Anston led off and was first-pitch swinging and smacked a double over the right fielder. Sophomore Matt Hamlet then sacrificed him over to third before junior Tony Sanchez was hit in the arm with a pitch to put runners on the corners.

Wiswall chopped a grounder up the middle and Sanchez was forced out at second, but Anston scored to put the Eagles ahead early, 1-0.

Grandal tied it up right away when he sliced a solo home run around the foul pole in left to leadoff the top of the second.

The Hurricanes put up two more runs in the third to take a 3-1 lead. Ted Blackman walked on four pitches with one out and then he got to second on a wild pitch. Hagerty cashed the run in with a single to left on a full count to put Miami ahead for the first time, 2-1. Chris Hermann stepped to the plate and doubled to the gap in right to put runners at second and third with one out and then Grandal got the other run home with a groundout to second base.

Miami didn't need anymore run support but added a run in both the eighth and ninth innings. Hagerty increased the Hurricanes' lead to 4-1 in the eighth with a sac fly and in the ninth, David Villasusso doubled down the third base line to score the Hurricanes' fifth run.

The second game of the series will be played on Saturday at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, home of the Brockton Rox. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. and tickets are just $5.
