Box Score

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Pat Dean threw 7.0 innings of shutout baseball to lead Boston College to a 13-3 win against No. 13 Miami in the series finale on Sunday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.

Dean allowed just four hits and one walk in his 7.0 innings of work. He struck out seven on the day to improve his record to 5-3. He retired nine of the first 10 batters he faced and only two runners reached second base while he was on the hill.

Junior Barry Butera led the Eagles (29-19, 12-13 ACC) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and three runs. Junior Mike Belfiore went 2-for-5 with a double, three RBI and a pair of runs scored while sophomore Mickey Wiswall had two hits and a RBI.

Junior Tony Sanchez scored three times in the game, going 1-for-2 with three walks. His 56 runs scored this season is third in a single season at BC and just four off of the record held by Steve Langone and Sean McGowan who both scored 60 times in the 1999 season.

All 11 batters that appeared at the plate for the Eagles were able to get on base and 10 different players recorded hits on the day.

Boston College got on the board first again with four runs in the bottom of the second. Butera walked to leadoff the frame and then freshman Brad Zapenas laid down a bunt and Butera was safe at second. Senior Harry Darling moved both runners into scoring position with a sac bunt down the third base line and then freshman Anthony Melchionda singled in a run in his first-career start to put the Eagles ahead.

Junior Robbie Anston followed suit with a single to center on the first pitch thrown to him to put BC on top, 2-0, and put runners on first and second. Melchionda and Anston used a double steal to get themselves into scoring position and sophomore Matt Hamlet plated the two runs when he hit a sharp grounder that the second baseman booted, putting the Eagles up 4-0.

The Eagles added three more runs in the fourth to increase their lead to seven. Sanchez dropped a double down the line in left between the shortstop and the left fielder to leadoff and Wiswall moved him up 90 feet with a groundout to the second baseman. Belfiore cashed in the run quickly, singling on the next pitch to increase the lead to 5-0.

Butera was also first-pitch swinging and singled to the gap in right to move Belfiore over to third base. Zapenas kept the rally going with a double down the third base line for another run and then Darling brought the final run of the inning home with a sacrifice fly.

BC tacked on another run in the sixth thanks to a Wiswall single after Sanchez led off the inning with a walk.

The Hurricanes weren't able to cross the plate until the top of the eighth inning. Nathan Melendres reached on an error to leadoff the inning and then Ryan Jackson singled to put runners on the corners. Vickash Ramjit cashed in Miami's first run with a double down the right field line and then Chris Hermann blooped a single over the second baseman's head for two runs to make it 8-3.

BC would put the game away with five more runs in the bottom of the eighth. Both Hamlet and Sanchez walked to leadoff the frame and then Wiswall beat out an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Belfiore doubled down the line in right to get two of those runs back to increase the lead to 10-3. Butera followed suit with a two-RBI double of his own to make it 12-3.

Junior John Spatola completed the inning when he singled through the drawn-in infield for the 13th run.

Hermann went 4-for-4 at the plate for the Hurricanes (31-16, 15-12 ACC) with two RBI.

Boston College will take the week off for exams before hosting LeMoyne this weekend for two games on Saturday and Sunday. Game time for Saturday is slated for 4 p.m. at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
