Bonzie Colson is in his sixth season on the Boston College basketball staff, his 11th season as a member of a collegiate coaching staff. Colson joined the Eagles as director of basketball operations in June 2001, after serving the previous three years as assistant coach at George Washington University. This past spring he assumed assistant coaching duties after the departures of Bill Coen and Ed Cooley.
Colson's 2001 arrival at the Heights reunited the former University of Rhode Island basketball star with Al Skinner, who coached Colson for one season at URI and gave Colson his start in the coaching profession as an assistant to Skinner at Rhode Island from 1991-93. After his departure from Rhode Island he served five years (1993-98) as head coach of both junior varsity and varsity teams at Frank Ballou High School in Washington, DC.
Colson then moved back to the collegiate ranks at George Washington University in 1998.
He has been on two different staffs that have produced both the number one and two career scorers. At George Washington it was Chris Monroe and Shawnte Rogers, and at Boston College it was Troy Bell and Craig Smith. Colson has experienced success at each one of his collegiate stops, totaling a 206-111 record. In his 10 years the teams have played in six NCAA tournaments and two NIT appearances.
A 1990 Rhode Island graduate, Colson anchored the middle for Rhode Island as the 1988 Rams advanced to the "Sweet Sixteen" and recorded a school-best 28-7 record. He was a four-year starting center for the Rams. Colson still ranks among the school's career leaders in blocked shots.
A graduate of Dunbar (D.C.) High School, Colson enjoyed a fine playing career on nationally-ranked teams during his schoolboy career.
Colson and his wife, Cyndi, have one son, Bonzie II (11), and one daughter, Sydni (3).
