Preston Murphy is in his first season on the Boston College basketball staff. The former University of Rhode Island basketball star was named the director of men's basketball operations by head coach Al Skinner in May 2006. Murphy was a four-year letterman at Rhode Island (1995-99). He was recruited by Skinner and played his first two years at URI for his new boss. He finished his collegiate playing career under coach Jim Harrick. A native of Saginaw, Mich., Murphy spent the past three seasons - 2003-06 - as the head basketball coach at Woonsocket (R.I.) High School. After graduating from URI with a degree in finance, Murphy played three seasons overseas -one in Belgium (1999-2000) and two in Holland (2000-02). During the summer of 2002, the 6-foot guard played for the Los Angeles Clippers in the Southern California Summer Pro League. Murphy also played one season with the Magic Johnson All-Stars. In 2003, the University of Rhode Island presented Murphy with its "Recent Alumnus Award" in recognition of his loyalty and commitment to the school.
