CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College travels to Tallahassee on Saturday to take on No. 20/19 Florida State in front of a national television audience on ABC. The Eagles, 6-3 and 2-3 in the ACC, control their own destiny during the last three games of the season. If BC defeats Florida State (7-2, 4-2), Wake Forest, and Maryland then the Eagles will represent the Atlantic Division in the ACC Championship Game for the second-straight season.
The BC defense led the Eagles to a 17-0 win against Notre Dame last weekend and has pitched three shutouts on the season. That number leads the country with No. 6/6 USC which also has three. The only other team in the country with more than one is BYU.
The Eagles picked off four Jimmy Clausen passes last Saturday with senior SS Paul Anderson grabbing two of them. He returned one 76 yards for a touchdown and was named ACC Defensive Back of the Week for his efforts. Boston College leads the nation with 18 interceptions on the season which is tied with North Carolina.
"The intensity and emotion level has been higher the last couple of weeks," junior LB Mark Herzlich said. Herzlich had 11 tackles against the Irish and was tabbed ACC Co-Defensive Lineman of the Week. "I think it is because of the sense of urgency we feel now. Basically our next three games are a three-game playoff (deciding) whether we get to the (ACC) Championship Game or not. Personally, I feel that it's time to take the extra step and give all that I can the next couple of weeks. In the past couple of weeks, I have felt the same way."
Florida State, which will be featuring all black uniforms on Saturday night for a black out, also sports one of the country's top defenses as it ranks fifth in pass defense (162.67) and total defense (265.56). The Seminoles also have a top 15 rushing defense, allowing just 102.89 yards on the ground per game.
The Seminole offense sports a running attack that is ranked 19th in the country with over 205 yards per game. Antone Smith paces FSU with 70.22 yards a game. Special teams are also a strength for Florida State as Michael Ray Garvin leads the nation in kick off return yardage (34.25) and kicker Graham Gano converts the most field goals in the country (2.43).
The Seminoles have won five of their last six outings and beat Clemson last Saturday in Tallahassee, 41-27.
