Avallon paces Eagles with first-run win

WINTER PARK, CO - The Boston College men's ski team began its run at USCSA Nationals this week by placing sixth in the giant slalom on Thursday. The Eagles placed one skier in the top 10, while two skiers did not finish.

Senior co-captain Gregory Avallon led the way for the Eagles by finishing seventh in the individual standings with a total time of 1 minute 55.49 seconds. Senior Thatcher Merrill took 24th with a time of 2:00.12 and sophomore Andrew Simmons placed 26th in 2:02.35. Junior Shawn Radman did not finish the first run and freshman Stephen Fiorella did not finish the second run.

The Eagles took sixth overall in the team standings with a total time of 357.96 seconds. Rocky Mountain College placed first in 343.90 seconds, Plymouth State University finished second in 346.70 seconds, and Colby-Sawyer College skied to a third-place finish in 348.90 seconds. Sierra Nevada College and University of Massachusetts rounded out the top five, respectively.

"We struggled a little bit today, but we had a good result overall," head coach Peter Endres said. "Greg won the first run and it was exciting to see him ski to the top of the field. He did a great job. A couple guys struggled to find the finish line, but the others stepped it up to give us a pretty solid team score despite some mistakes."

The men's ski team returns to the slopes on Saturday, March 10 for the slalom race at USCSA Nationals in Winter Park, CO.
