PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Nick Cianci scored in the 16th minute to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over fourth-ranked Boston College at Glay Field.

BC falls to 1-1, while the Friars improved to 2-0. It marked the second consecutive season in which the Friars defeated the Eagles. Last season, PC held off BC, 1-0, in Newton, Mass.

Providence scored the game's only goal at 15:06. Timothy Ritter fired a right-footed shot that Cianci redirected at the near post and into the net.

The Eagles created several scoring chances in the second half and outshot the host Friars, 4-3 in the game's final 45 minutes, but were unable to convert.

In the 69th minute, Greg O'Neil was sent in on a through ball at the right side of the box, but his right-footed shot was blocked by a PC defender.

Freshman Edvin Worley tried to score the equalizer in the 78th minute, but his header off a set piece was saved by Providence netminder Timothy Murray (one save).

Boston College returns action -- and the city of Providence, R.I. -- this weekend in the adidas-Brown Classic. The Eagles will face Villanova (Sept. 5) and St. John's (Sept. 7). First touch for Friday's game between the Eagles and the Wildcats is set for 5 p.m.
