Women's Basketball Opens Up ACC Action at Georgia Tech

Boston College improved to 11-3 after defeating in-state rival Massachusetts, 89-55 on Sunday, Jan. 4 at Conte Forum. Mickel Picco had 27 points, while Stefanie Murphy notched a double-double (17 points, 12 rebounds). Ayla Brown and Carolyn Swords notched 10 points apiece in the win.

The Boston College program is currently 106-67 vs. in-state teams and 9-2 in the last three seasons. Boston College has won three straight games (vs. Dartmouth, Fairfield and UMass.).

BC vs. GEORGIA TECH

• Georgia Tech leads the head-to-head series, 3-2.

• Last season, Boston College stunned the Yellow Jackets, 62-53, at Conte Forum. The Eagles hit six free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Carolyn Swords had 14 points, while Jaclyn Thoman notched 13 points and had five rebounds.

• The two teams played for the first time in 1991 in the Pepsi-Church's Classic, Miami, Fla. Georgia Tech won, 97-61.

THE DISH

The Eagles reached a season-high in team assists in the win over UMass on Sunday, Jan. 4. The Eagles had 28 assists on 40 field goals. The Eagles have dished out 20 or more assists in a game six times this season. Boston College is averaging 18.4 assists a game, which places the Eagles second in the conference behind North Carolina in team assists and fourth in the country.

PLAYER NOTES

• Junior Mickel Picco extended her three-point streak. The Austin, Texas native has hit a three-pointer in 22 consecutive games dating back to the 2007-08 season. She now has 121 career treys and is fifth on the all-time list at BC for three-pointers made. The record is held by Cal Bouchard with 212 from 1996-2002.

 

 

Stefanie Murphy had a career-high six assists in the win over UMass. She also had season high's in field goals made (8) and rebounds (12).

• Massachusett scored 17 first-half points and shot 17% from the floor which was the lowest point total and shooting percentage the Eagles have held an opposing team to this season. • The 89-55 victory was the largest margin of victory for the Eagles this season (34 points).

• Three players - Mickel Picco, Carolyn Swords and Stefanie Murphy - are the only three players to have started all 14 games this season. • Mickel Picco has scored in double figures in 13-of-14 games, while Carolyn Swords has reached double digits in 12-of-14 games.

BC vs. RANKED TEAMS

Tonight's game vs. No. 22 Georgia Tech is the first time BC has played a ranked team since Nov. 27. The Eagles beat No. 22/24 TCU on November 27, which was the first time since 2005-06 in which BC beat a Top 25 team. BC defeated three ranked teams in 2005-06, including No. 14 Stanford on Dec. 28, No. 24 NC State on Jan. 30, and Ohio State in the NCAA Tournament on March 21.
