Women's Ice Hockey Wins First-Ever Beanpot Championship

Sophomore Deborah Spillane led the Eagles to their first-ever Beanpot championship on Tuesday night as they defeated host No. 10 Harvard University, 2-0. Spillane was named the Beanpot MVP as she scored both goals in the championship game for the Eagles, who have now been to the final game nine times in the tournament's 28-year history. Senior goalie Alison Quandt recorded her second shutout of the season while earning the Bertagna Award for the top goaltender in the tournament.
The Eagles struck first as they scored at 37 seconds into the first period. Spillane, BC's leading scorer, drove a slap-shot goal from freshman Meghan Fardelmann past Harvard goalie, senior Ali Boe to put the Eagles ahead, 1-0. Both teams played excellent defense for the remainder of the period but the Eagles and Quandt protected their one goal lead as the two teams entered the second period.
At 2:38 in the second period, Spillane broke away from the Crimson defense and took the puck from classmate Sarah Feldman and slipped it past Boe for her second tally of the night. Sitting on a 2-0 lead, the Eagles kept up their strong defense as the Crimson continued to pepper Quandt with shot after shot.
Finally in the third, the Crimson's best attempts at a rally were foiled as BC's defense had an answer for every shot and remained resilient.
Quandt finished the night with 23 saves. Quandt now has 18 or more saves in 12 of the last 13 games she has played in.
The Eagles return to Hockey East action on Saturday, Feb. 18 as the team travels to Providence. The puck drops at 2 p.m.
