Westwood, Mass. - Led by junior captain Jenna McCabe's four goals, Boston College overpowered Holy Cross, 18-6, on Saturday afternoon in a game that honored the three Eagles' seniors. BC improved its overall record to 6-8 (2-3 ACC) while the Crusaders finished the season 5-11 (2-4 Patriot).
Eleven different players scored for the Eagles, as McCabe led the way with five points (4g, 1a). Sophomore Lauren Costello and juniors Emily Hannigan and Lauren Fitzpatrick recorded two goals and one assist in the contest. Senior Shauna Culhane scored a goal and dished out an assist while freshman Hannah Alley nailed two scores. Culhane and classmate Catharine Saylor, juniors Maura Mahoney and Margot Spatola, sophomore Sarah Sedgwick and freshman Jill Rekart all contributed with one goal apiece. Freshman Kate Horsman also recorded an assist in the win.
The Eagles scored the first five goals of the game, starting off with Sedgwick at the 25:48 mark. They held off the Crusaders until there was 11:32 to play in the first half, when Holy Cross got on the board on a score by Nikki Bolduc. The two teams traded goals before Bolduc scored her second. McCabe hit her first goal with four minutes to play to make the score 7-3. The Crusaders lessened the gap a minute later when Ali Baird hit her first of the game.
BC started the second half much like the first, nailing three goals in a row to take a 10-4 lead. Alley hit two in a row before Baird scored her second of the day. The Eagles traded goals with the Crusaders again, but McCabe rattled off three consecutive goals of her own to give her team a comfortable 14-6 advantage.
The day ended perfectly for the senior class, as Saylor, a defender who has started in every game since coming to the Heights, scored her first career goal with three minutes to play. Culhane followed her two minutes later when she found the back of the net for her 50th career goal. Senior goalie Courtney Zwirko played the final 11 minutes and made one save in her final home game in the maroon and gold.
The Eagles outshot the Crusaders, 31-22, and edged them out in ground balls, 22-18. Draw controls were also almost even, but Holy Cross came away with 14 to BC's 12. McCabe and Fitzpatrick extended their scoring streaks to 14 games, as both of them have notched a point in every game this season.
Boston College travels to Charlottesville, Va., on Thursday, April 24 to play in the first round of the ACC Championships. The fourth-seeded Eagles will take on No. 5 seed North Carolina at 3:30 p.m. in Scott Stadium.
