BC-UNC Box Score
The Boston College women's soccer team suffered a tough 3-2 loss to No. 2 North Carolina last night in an ACC match. The Eagles fell to 8-3-2 overall and 2-2-1 in the ACC, while UNC remained undefeated at 5-0-0 in the conference and 12-1-1 overall.
Boston College is the first team to score two goals on the Tar Heels on their home turf in a regular season game since 2005. Duke defeated UNC on October 9, 2005, 2-1.
After a back and forth first half, the Eagles struck first in the second half. Boston College took a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute when junior Gina DiMartino scored her second goal of the season. DiMartino scored on a long shot just outside the box.
The Boston College defense was strong all night and held the lead until the 64th minute of play. UNC's Casey Nogueria headed in a cross from Meghan Klingenberg to tie the game. Three minutes later, Allie Long headed in a chip shot from Brittani Bartok to give the home team a 2-1 lead.
Boston College did not give up as the Eagles pressured UNC's defense. The Eagles earned a corner kick which Caitlin Hiler sent back to Hannah Cerrone running from the back. Cerrone sent a pass back to Hiler in the corner, who placed a long ball to the far post. Enter BC sophomore Natalie Crutchfield, who made a run from the weak side and beat a UNC defender to the ball. Crutchfield deflected the ball into the back of the goal to tie the game at 2-2 with 15 minutes to play.
The Eagles continued to push forward. Minutes later, Eagles freshman Alaina Beyar broke in with three defenders chasing her to the goal. Beyar released a shot from the top of the box but it sailed high over the goal.
BC seemed to control the momentum until UNC scored the winning goal. Bartok headed in a cross from Klingenberg in the 83rd minute of the game.
The Eagles best chance to tie the game came off the foot of freshman Julia Bouchelle with two minutes to play. Bouchelle's shot was smothered by UNC's goalkeeper Anna Rodenbough (two saves).
Boston College freshman goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni finished with eight saves, five in the second half.
