Boston College advanced to the Sweet 16 with a 1-0 victory over Boston University in the second round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Tournament, played at Storrs, Conn. This was the Eagles' 13th shutout of the season, the most in school history. The Eagles improve to 13-5-2.
With less than three minutes to go, Luciani nailed home her third goal of the season from a pass from Kia McNeill. McNeill picked up a loose ball in the Terrier half, brought it into the box and dished it off to Luciani who placed it into the near right side.
Junior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione made four saves for the shutout, playing an excellent game and making crucial saves that kept the Terriers scoreless. The defense was led by senior Lindsey McArdle, with junior Laura Georges, freshman Kerri McNicholas, junior Mary Schneck and sophomore Katie Coffey on the backline. The defense held BU's leading scorer Meghann Cook to one shot.
Statistically, the Eagles outshot the Terrier 17-11, while also holding the edge in corner kicks, 4-1.
After a scoreless first half the Eagles entered the second half with a 10-4 advantage in shots over the Terriers. From the first whistle the Eagles put pressure on the BU defense, putting six shots on goal.
Fifteen minutes into the second half, BU had a scoring opportunity off a restart, when Lauren Basham fired off a shot that rebounded out and Melissa Shulman headed the rebound just over the cross bar.
In the first 20 minutes of the second half the Eagles' defense withstood a Terrier offensive surge. Boston College created scoring opportunities off its corner kicks, with Jenny Maurer taking the majority of them. Kia McNeill nearly connected off a corner kick when her shot was punched away by Terrier goalkeeper Christina Reuter.
This is the second time this season the Eagles have defeated BU. In the first game of the season the Eagles won, 2-0, behind goals from freshman Caroline Walden and McNeill.
The Eagles now await the winner of Sunday's St. Louis-Santa Clara match.
