The 25th-ranked Boston College women's soccer advanced to the third-round of the NCAA tournament when the Eagles defeated 12th-ranked Rutgers on penalty kicks, Sunday, Nov. 12 in Piscataway, New Jersey. The two teams played a scoreless 110:00, but the Eagles won, 4-2, in the shootout. Senior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione made two saves while all four Boston College shooters converted on their opportunities. The win improves the Eagles to 13-6-2 and advances them to the Sweet 16, where they will face Penn State at 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 19. It is the third straight season the Eagles have advanced to the round of 16.

Much of the first twenty minutes were played in Boston College's attacking zone, but there were few significant scoring opportunities. One of the Eagles' two shots on goal before intermission was with twenty-six minutes on the clock. Senior Jenny Maurer took a shot from the top of the box which hit the crossbar and deflected down into play for Rutgers goalkeeper Erin Guthrie to scoop up and save.

Rutgers put pressure on the Eagles' net late in the first half. The Rutgers offense woke up when at 17:05, the Scarlet Knights' Kristen Edmonds sprinted up the left side to catch up to a dump-in and slid the ball past a lunging Sarah Buonomo in the Eagles net. The goal was called back though because of an off sides call on Edmonds near midfield.

Momentum swung back in favor of the Eagles in the second half as Boston College took three corner kicks to Rutgers' one, and took some quality shots on goal. Freshman Kelly Henderson took a long shot from the wide right wing and junior Kia McNeill directed a header on goal within minutes of each other, but both were stopped by Guthrie. Neither team could net the ball before regulation, leading the game into overtime. In regulation, Rutgers outshot Boston College, 8-5.

Both teams had opportunities to finish off the game in the first overtime period, but the Eagles dominated play in the second overtime period, outshooting Rutgers, 5-0.

Come penalty kicks, Criscione made stops in the second and fourth rounds. Eagles Maurer, Gina DiMartino, McNeill and Caitlin Hiler successfully netted their shots to advance Boston College to the third round of the NCAA tournament. -BC-
