The No. 10 Boston College women's soccer scored three first half goals and never looked back as the Eagles defeated Northeastern, 4-0, in the second round off the NCAA Tournament at the Newton Soccer Field on Sunday afternoon.
Boston College (15-5-2) will now advance to the round of 16 next weekend and play ACC foe Florida State. The Eagles have advanced to the round of 16, four times in the last five years. This is the fifth time the program has advanced to the Sweet 16.
Freshman forward Stephanie Wirth scored her second goal in two games for the Eagles. Wirth one-timed a pass from Hannah Cerrone to the left of the Northeastern goalkeeper Stephanie Gordon to give BC a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute of the game. Caldwell started the play when she found Cerrone streaking down the sideline.
In the 32nd minute of action, Cerrone broke down the side line off a great pass from Amy Caldwell. Cerrone ran with a NU defender on her side and created enough space to get a low shot to the far post for a 2-0 BC lead. Cerrone had a goal and two assists in the game. She now has two goals and five assists for nine points this season.
Senior Brianna Wilson-Byrne gave the Eagles 3-0 lead on a great individual effort. Cerrone switched the point of attack to Wilson-Byrne. The defender carried the ball to just outside the box and fired a shot to the far post for her first goal of the season.
At the half, BC not only held a 3-0 lead, but the Eagles out shot Northeastern, 11-2.
The second half Boston College continued to carry the play. The Eagles would strike in the 72nd minute off a corner kick. Cerrone sent a low ball towards the top of the box. Senior midfielder Kerri McNicholas settled the ball and ripped a shot to the right of the diving Gordon from just inside the box for a 4-0 BC lead. It was the first goal of the season for McNicholas.
Boston College was led offensively by Amy Caldwell with two assists and Cerrone notched a goal and two assists. Boston College had 18 shots to the Huskies, 4. The Eagles also had six corner kicks to the Huskies one.
The Eagles freshman goalkeeper Jillian Mastroianni earned her 10 shut out of the season and improved to 14-5-2 on the season. She had three saves in the match.

Freshman Stephanie Wirth earned her third start of the season. Wirth scored the third goal in BC's first round win over Central Connecticut on Friday. The goal against Northeastern is her first career game-winning goal ... Senior Brianna Wilson-Byrne found the back of the net for the first time this season. The former forward, now defender has five career goals ... Defender Hannah Cerrone recorded her first four point game as she had one goal and two assists in today's match ... In the first two games of the NCAA Tournament, Boston College out-shot its opponents, 35-9 and had 16 more corner kicks.
