No. 14 Women's Soccer falls, 2-1, in NCAA Third Round

Nov. 19, 2005

Box Score

Santa Clara, Calif. - The No. 14 women's soccer team fell, 2-1, in the NCAA third round to No. 8 Santa Clara at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, Calif. The Eagles finish the season with a 13-6-2 overall record, having made their third straight appearance in the NCAA tournament and second consecutive trip to the round of 16. Boston College also finishes the season with 13 shutouts, a school record.

The Eagles struck first with 9:07 remaining in the first half, when senior co-captain Lindsey McArdle stepped up to take a free kick from 20 yards out. McArdle sent the ball into the far right corner of the box, where sophomore Nicole Reyes redirected it into the top right corner for her third goal of the season. This is the second time this season McArdle has assisted off a free kick, having assisted on Maddie Johnson's game-winning goal against Duke on Sept. 30.

At the 58:12 mark in the second half, the Bronco's were awarded a penalty kick. Tina Estrada stepped up to take the kick and placed it in the lower left side to even the score at one. It was her 11th goal of the season.

The Bronco's scored the decisive final goal at 68:51 when Jordan Angeli put the ball in the right corner off a pass from Micaela Esquivel. It was Angeli's 12th goal of the season and sixth gamewinner.

The Eagles started off the first half withstanding Santa Clara's offensive pressure, holding them to three shots. Junior goalkeeper Arianna Criscione collected two saves in the first half to keep the Bronco's at bay.

Boston College prevented Santa Clara's scoring opportunities with strong defensive performances from McArdle, junior Laura Georges, junior Mary Schneck, sophomore Katie Coffey and freshman Kerri McNicholas.

Criscione made crucial saves in the second half, collecting a total of nine - a season high. One of her saves came off a Santa Clara corner kick that sailed to the far post. Criscione made the stop when a Bronco's forward headed the ball to the lower left corner. The junior from Walnut, Calif., dove to her right and made the save just before it crossed the line. Another crucial save came with 35 minutes remaining when Santa Clara had a near breakaway. Criscione came off her line and stopped the breakaway at point blank range.

Each of the Eagles four NCAA tournament goals have been scored by a different offensive player. Junior Molly Dane and junior co-captain Jenny Maurer each notched a goal against Dartmouth, while sophomore Tara Luciani provided the Eagles with the game-winning goal against Boston University.
