Eagles Runners Compete At NCAA Regionals

May 29, 2007

Gainesville, Fla. - Seven Eagles runners qualified for and competed at the NCAA Regionals held this past weekend at the University of Florida in Gainesville. Freshman sensation Caitlin Bailey continued her successful season by finishing fourth and qualifying for the NCAA Championships next week in Sacramento, Calif.

Bailey, who took second at the ACC Championships, qualified for the finals by taking second in her preliminary heat with a time of 2:07.65. She improved on that time in the finals, and her 2:06.53 time was good for fourth overall, just behind runners from Cornell, UNC, and UPenn.

Freshman Jessica Driscoll competed in the 1500 meter run, finishing 18th out of 32 runners with a time of 4:28.04.

Senior Kristen Coon ran well in the 3000 meter steeplechase, coming in 16th out of 40 runners at a time of 10:38.43.

Junior Nikki Tufts and senior Jessica Flinn both competed in the 5000 meter run. Tufts came in 21st with a time of 16:54.33, while Flinn came home 30th in 17:22.02.

On the men's side, only juniors Patrick Mellea and Jeremy Zagorski competed. Both took part in the 1500 meter run. Mellea finished 19th out of 30 runners, with a time of 3:49.80, while Zagorski came in 21st in 3:51.90.

Though the season is over for most, Bailey will run on to Sacramento. The freshman runner has been among the most successful Eagles this season, and will look to continue her strong running against the nation's best at the NCAA Championships June 6-9.
